Saving a Game

Any game can be saved to your calendar by tapping the text area for the game. Any previous version of the game already in your calendar will be replaced.

If you define a calendar called “NHL Games”, games will be stored in that calendar rather than in your default calendar. This will allow you to manage the games in your calendar more effectively.

In iOS 6, a new privacy setting was added to control access to your calendar. This setting must be on if you want to save games. The first time you save a game, iOS will ask for access. You may need to repeat the save operation afterwards.

The TV information for the game along with a link to the matchup for the game is saved.

Standings (Points Percentage)

This displays the standings for each conference sorted by Points Percentage and division structure for each team in the conference. The teams in each division with the highest Points Percentage are seeded 1-2 as in the NHL standings. This representation of the standings presents a truer view of relative team performance as it completely factors in the number of games played by each team, which the normal standings do not due to huge disparities in the number of games played by each team during the course of the season.

This is available for the regular season only.

Points Percentage

This displays the standings for each conference sorted by Points Percentage value for each team in the conference. Use this to determine which teams have the best records in the conference.

Separate Points Percentage statistics are computed for the regular season and the playoffs.

See legend.

This is a more accurate measure for comparison of teams than points as it factors in the number of games played, which the standard NHL points-based standings do not (except when points are equal). For example, consider team A with a record of 10-3-4 and team B with a record of 11-3-1. Team A has 24 points vs. 23 for Team B but Team B’s Points Percentage is better at 0.767 vs. Team A at 0.706.

Points Percentage is calculated based on the total number of points divided by the total points available (i.e., 2x the number of games played) and is a decimal value ranging from 0 to 1.000.

Also shown are the division, conference and league records (points and Points Percentage). Divisions and conferences are sorted by Points Percentage (highest to lowest).

Points and Points Percentages for a division are shown in green when the Points Percentage for the division is higher than the conference average and red when below. Points and Points Percentages for a conference are shown in green when the Points Percentage for the conference is higher than the league average and red when below.

Eastern Conference divisions (Atlantic and Metropolitan) are shown in blue while Western Conference divisions (Pacific and Central) are shown in purple.

Momentum

This displays the standings for each conference sorted by Momentum value for each team in the conference. Use this to determine which teams are hot and which teams are not.

Separate Momentum statistics are computed for the regular season and the playoffs. Momentum values are reset at the start of the playoffs.

See legend.

Momentum is calculated using a proprietary formula based on a team’s performance over the last 10 games. More recent games are weighted highest, while the oldest games in the 10-game period are weighted lowest. Momentum can shift significantly in value over a short stretch of games, especially with consecutive wins or losses.

Momentum is a decimal value ranging from 0 to 1.000. When the team's Momentum value is higher than its Points Percentage, the team is playing better than normal so the value is shown in green. When the Momentum value is lower than the Points Percentage, the team is playing worse than normal so the value is shown in red. When equal, it is shown in blue. Look for teams with both Points Percentage and Momentum shown in green to find the hottest teams in the league.

Head-To-Head

The NHL schedule is unbalanced and teams do not play the same number of games against each other team. Thus, if a team is in a weak division, the points and Points Percentage metrics can be inflated due to the lower calibre of competition in that division. Similarly, a team may look worse than it really is if it plays in a stronger division.

The Head-To-Head metric is used to measure a team’s performance against other teams in the league. Differences in schedule and opponents are normalized out resulting in a uniform metric that can be used to fairly compare teams in different divisions or conferences. It is the best metric to show how good a team really is when compared to another.

This is available for the regular season only.

Expected Goals

This is the output of a predictive model that analyzes all goals and shots from all positions on the ice to determine a league-wide shooting percentage for each position on the ice. A team's specific shot distribution is fed into the model to determine how many goals it “should” score or allow based on the positions of the shots actually taken by the team.

A high “expected goals for” number indicates that the team is taking shots from higher danger positions and thus should score more often. A low “expected goals for” number indicates that the shots are being taken from less dangerous positions. When this number is compared to the actual goals scored by the team, it indicates how good the team is at finishing chances from those positions.

A high “expected goals against” number for indicates that the team is allowing its opponents to take shots from more dangerous positions and thus should be scored against more often. A low “expected goals against” number indicates that the team is allowing its opponents to take shots from less dangerous positions and thus should be scored against less often. When this number is compared to the actual goals scored against the team, it indicates how good the team is at stopping shots from those positions (i.e., goaltending).

Also shown are the shot attempts (Corsi), unblocked shot attempts (Fenwick) and shots on goal for and against per game.

The expected goals and shot data are combined to compute an “Average Shot Quality” metric. This metric is a measure of the average quality of all unblocked shot attempts and ranges from 0-10 with 10 being highest quality.

Data here is compiled for all manpower situations, not just 5-on-5.

D

This is an extremely powerful table that clearly illustrates a team’s strengths and weaknesses on offense or defense.

Good defensive teams will have higher values in the 1-3 goal range, and lower values in the 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8+ ranges, with a single peak. Strong goaltending will show up in the A0 entry. Weaker defensive teams may have multiple peaks in the A row.

Strong offensive teams will have low values in F0 entry, and have higher values in the 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8+ ranges. Multiple peaks in the F row could indicate an inconsistent attack, or possibly a team that takes advantage of weaker opponents by scoring frequently against them. Weaker teams may have high values in A0, indicating they are often shut out.

The D row is a key indicator of a team’s performance. There should be a green peak at D1-D2, and then a quick tail-off. Ideally, all of the D entries will be green. Many believe that the single-goal won/loss difference (D1) is a key indicator of a team’s performance. Red values are bad.
